Red: |
|
|
|
| |
Brise de France Merlot 2009 - €6.50
Supple and round in the mouth, followed by the evolution of the rich and complex aromas of red fruits and spices. Another great value (and great tasting) red from the Languedoc. |
|
 |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Monestier Shiraz 2009 - €7.50
A lightly oaked Syrah/Shiraz from the Languedoc, made in a modern, almost 'New World' style. It has a lovely vanilla-like point from the oak, marrying beautifully with the soft dark fruit in the wine. A real crowd-pleaser.
Our comment from tasting: price versus delivery is exceptional. When you have to taste wine (tough job) one’s expectations can be very wrong. Case in point. |

Les Rocs Nobles Bordeaux 2007 - €9.00
Classic red Bordeaux, hard to fault. Blended from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it has typical notes of red peppers and tobacco. |

|
|
|
|
| |
Cuvee des Galets Cotes du Rhone 2010 - €9.00
The label might not be completely to your taste, but wait until you get inside the bottle! This is surely the most scrumptious possible manifestation of that much abused species, the everyday Cotes du Rhone. It’s lightish to medium-bodied, but it manages to pack in so much yummy dark fruit, warming spiciness and southern French sunshine that it is impossible not to resist another glass (or several). Blended from the classic southern Rhone varieties of Grenache (50%), Carignan (30%) and Syrah/Shiraz (20%).
Our comment from tasting: Blended and very nice and our Frenchman’s favourite Cotes du Rhone!

Manoir Grignon Cabernet Syrah 2010 - €9.50
Juicy, rich and fruity, this is wine from the South of France that has ‘Made in the New World’ stamped all over it. It is dark and intense, yet immediately accessible, beautifully smooth and with some lovely sweet oak flavours.
Our comment from tasting: one of our tasters favourites, which we decided must have been the ‘New World’ influence (a jammy sweetness the French would dislike apparently!).

Domaine Perillieres AOP
Cotes du RhoneVillages 2008 - €11.50
Made from 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache in the Gard region between Avignon and Nimes, this is surely a wine that encapsulates why the Rhone Valley is one of the best sources in the world of accessible, interesting, charming red wines. It's got body and substance, but it doesn't knock you off your perch. It's got sunshine and warmth, but it doesn't burn your mouth with an alcohol overload. It's got flavours of delicious dark candied fruits and sweet cinnamon spice, but it's no confected fruit juice. Very difficult indeed to resist finishing the bottle... Pair up with some lovely rosemary-scented lamb chops.

Domaine Aujoux – Fleurie 2009 - €17.00
Please, please, please do not associate all wines from Beaujolais with the nasty thin stuff they punt out in autumn as 'Beaujolais Nouveau'. If ever there was a marketing wheeze gone wrong, that was it. Proper Beaujolais is a beautiful, feminine wine and there are few more graceful parts of the region than the village of Fleurie and its wines. It's made with the Gamay grape (as with all Beaujolais), giving luscious, young berry fruit aromas and flavours. 2009 is the vintage they've all gone bonkers about in that part of the world. Try this and you'll see why. Utterly seductive wine.
Our comment from tasting: we couldn’t agree more with the blurb. Be seduced! |

Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 - €38.03
Domaine Giraud Tradition 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
A lovely, opulent, well-rounded 2007 Châteauneuf made from 50% grenache. Full bodied and ripe tasting with soft tannins - rather like rich fruit cake with deep, complex aromas of spicy black cherry fruits. |

Philippe Livera Clos Village
Gevrey Chambertin 2005 - €53.89
This Burgundian Pinot Noir (from 60+year old vines) has a deep purple hue and notes of boysenberries and liquorice on its aromatic nose. Notes of chocolate blend with cinnamon and black pepper on the spicy palate; complex, engaging and always seductive |

Chateau Leoville Barton Saint-Julien
Grand Cru Classe 2006 - €109.00
The historic Bordeaux domain of Léoville Barton has produced some of the best wines in Bordeaux for the last 20 years. This great wine is a blend of cabernet-sauvignon, merlot and cabernet-franc grapes. One of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-coloured 2004 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep. The 2002 vintage has just received a score of 19.5 out of a maximum of 20 from the renowned “Revue des Vins de France” exactly the same grade as the Mouton-Rothschild 2005, Latour 2005 and Petrus 2005. It’s a fantastic wine which rubs shoulders with the big boys, without breaking the bank. |

Vincent Girardin Clos de Vougeot
Grand Cru 2006 - €118.00
Scented aromas of black raspberry, rose petal, minerals, liquorice and blood orange. Racy and light on its feet; not a dense style of Clos Vougeot but quite refined and perfumed. Finishes with very suave tannins and subtle aromatic persistence. |

Domaine Bergon Chardonnay 2009 - €7.70
Lovely, smooth, fresh-tasting unoaked Chardonnay from this family-owned Domaine in the Languedoc. A bit of creaminess offers the perfect balance to the lemony, peachy fruit flavours. |

|

Domaine des Lauriers
Picpoul de Pinet Prestige 2009 - €9.00
Picpoul de what, you might ask? Picpoul is a grape that grows close to the Med coast, south of Montpellier, next to the massive oyster beds they have down there. It's fab with seafood and this one has a touch more class and creaminess that lets it stand up to other dishes, too. Personally, I would neck the lot on the terrace with a few olives! |

Domaine de Cibadies Chardonnay 2010 - €9.50
Although the Chardonnay grape has fallen out of fashion for many, it remains capable of producing superb wines, whether for drinking as an aperitif or - in particular - at the table. This lovely wine from the Languedoc is a perfect example. It benefits from some oak, yet the wood doesn't dominate and spoil the wine. It is round and rich - a great partner for fuller-bodied and spicier dishes.
Our comment from tasting: Under rated was our first thought and less buttery than you may think. A very nice wine. |

L'Escargot Sauvignon Blanc 2010-11 - €9.50
Here's a cracking Sauvignon Blanc from southwest France, made in a more New World style than most French Sauvignons. It has all the grassy, gooseberry and elderflower notes that we've come to expect from the Kiwis, but with a crisper, firmer core, that makes it perfect alongside a range of fish, poultry or cheese-based dishes.
Our comment from tasting: this was the surprise one from our tasting. Produced by an Englishman who knows his wine and for the price, well worth a few bottles.

Domaine Guenault AOP
Sauvignon de Touraine 2009 - €11.00
A bright and crisp Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley's famous Touraine region, with depth, elegance and a grassy, lemony, elderflower-like freshness. The grapes for this vibrant wine are drawn from some of the best vineyards situated on the hallowed tufa soils, contributing to its pure, mineral character. It can rightly be called a 'baby Sancerre'. Match it up with goat's cheese.
Our comment from tasting: Suvignon is such a distinctive taste and this one doesn’t disappoint. We love it. |

|
| |
Croix de Montceau St Veran Terres Secretes 2008 - €16.00
The St Veran appellation is one of Southern Burgundy's finest, situated just to the west of Macon. The Chardonnay vines are planted on mostly hilly, chalky terrain, giving the wines a fine, minerally core. But its more southerly situation makes the wines riper, richer and rounder than white Burgundies from further north. This wine comes from vines planted in a small vineyard that is known as the 'Croix de Montceau'. It is luscious, opulent stuff, with rich, dense flavours overlapping on the palate. The mineral core is surrounded by a soft creaminess, allied to ripe flavours of peach, cooked pears and melon. A touch of oak knits everything together to produce a perfectly-balanced, glorious wine.
Our comment from tasting: We didn’t think we would like this but au contraire, if a Saint Veran fan, this is a very tasty dry white. |

Paul Zinck Riesling 2008 - €22.00
Zinck offers wines that are clear and coherent, reflecting the varieties of Alsatian wine. The Riesling Terroir 2008 expresses the typical aromatic and elegant character of grape. Perfectly try, deliciously opulent, with intense hints of ripe fruit and smoothness.
Our comment from tasting: Suprisingly good as we were suspicious! |

|
| |
Domaine Fouassier 'la Garenne' Sancerre 2010 - €22.00(Organic/Biodynamic)
Domaine Fouassier is a biodynamically-run estate in the classic Loire Valley appellation of Sancerre. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, this wine has all the hallmark freshness and lemony fruit that you would expect from the area. It is delicate, elegant, restrained – a world away from the bright and breezy zingfest that we’ve come to expect from New Zealand Sauvignons. But it has a richness, too – a fuller mouthfeel than many wines of the region. A lovely wine, whether to drink on its own as an aperitif, or to match up with goat’s cheese or fish.
Our comment from tasting: Y ou can’t drink just any Sancerre and think you will be happy. We have found this to our detriment so this one ticks all the boxes you would expect. Delicious.

Quenard Chignin-Bergeron Les Terrasses 2009 - €22.50
The wine has lots of fruit on the nose, with creamy apricot and white peach rising from the glass. The medium to full body of this wine make it an ideal partner for fish in sauce, scallops, poached salmon or white meats. It is a fabulous wine from the Savoie region made from the grape known elsewhere as Rouossane, this is rich and complex, made by one of the region’s top dogs, Michel Quenard.
Our comment from tasting: I think twice about Savoie wine but this is a corker that took us all by surprise. We can honestly say this is a very nice wine.

Domaine de la Rossignole Sancerre 2009 - €19.57
Lemony, citric aromas with bright fruit on the palate (peach, citrus, and even a hint of melon). The touch of grassy flavours and pure Sauvignon fruit will give you a great idea of what the Sancerre appellation is all about. |
|
|
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Domaine des Deux Roches – Pouilly Fuissé Vielles Vignes 2007 - €29.00
There's a lot of elegance in this wine, made by Domaine des Deux Roches, one of Southern Burgundy's star names. The nose expresses a mineral complexity and beautiful fruits. The mouth is well balanced, structured and round with generosity. The Chardonnay vines are between 60 and 90 years old and face south-east
Our comment from tasting: by far one of our favourites. Great colour (yellowy) but not buttery just thoroughly enjoyable. |
|
 |
|

|
| |
Domaine Moreau Naudet Chablis 2009 - €26.00
(Organic)
This 300-year old domaine is fast becoming one of the most respected Chablis producers since Stéphane Moreau took it over in 1991. The wines have all the purity and mineral straightness that passionate Chablis drinkers are seeking, but also this extra fruit and charm that makes them accessible for instant pleasure to everybody. They have been widely praised in the press, with Jancis Robinson being a particular fan.
Our comment from tasting: Like the Sancerre we had to test quite a few Chablis before we found our Prince. Much improved from any others listed in the past and the price is well worth it. |

Vincent Girardin Meursault Premier Cru Les Charmes 2001 - €55.00
When you hear people talk dreamily of their love of great Burgundy wine, this is the sort of thing they are talking about. With nearly 10 years under its belt, it is in fabulous shape right now. It still retains a fresh mineral streak, cut right through the middle of the wine. But that is enveloped in all manner of rich, wonderful flavours - nutty, creamy, buttery. Truly delicious stuff.
Our comment from tasting: We are big fans if you want to push the boat out. |

Prosecco Belstar (Italy) - €14.95
Good Prosecco should be all about lovely, crisp, fresh fizz - the sort of thing that puts a smile on your face and makes you reach for another glass. The Belstar does just that. With only 11% alcohol, it is thirst-quenchingly tempting stuff. On both the nose and palate, it is like biting into a cool, crunchy apple.
Our comment from tasting: Delicious for any Prosecco lover.
